Nothing much to say; said almost everything on the last two posts, but have have a blast on your birthday! :D
Glad I met you. You're the best, and I wish you the best. :3
Happy birthday, May! :)
One thing I notice about our education system is that, they seem to focus a lot on traditional knowledge that are basically extinct in this modern world we’re living in. I cannot deny that certain things will continuously be useful no matter how old it gets; such like amazing discoveries done by past scientists that we still acknowledge today. They are without a doubt, the basic to the advancement we achieve and enjoy today. Now, let us put those aside. Today, I’m mainly talking about education we learn on technology. Computer technology to be more precise.
The one thing the education system here in Malaysia do not stress on is knowledge on using a modern advance technology. I would not say a simple computer is difficult and challenging enough to deserve a class all to itself. However, I find that my idea was in fact, contradicting. Throughout my time being the president of my school’s computer club, I taught students week after week on more modern programs we have nowadays in a computer. One thing I realise over the year is that, 90% of students learn lower than 10% of most things I taught.
What could be the cause of this occurrence? I soon realise it was the lack of basic knowledge on using a simple computer. When I say basic, I mean things like, how to access the internet with a browser? How to open a file? How do you open a program? In fact, what IS a program? Even, how do you save, copy and paste something? Yes, half the class don’t know how to do that. So, I spent most of my time teaching people what they should already know rather than the interesting and amazing things modernization of the world of computers have to offer.
But wait, our education system includes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) lessons don’t they? Well, they very well damn do. My school does, at least. Since the start of year 1 in school until year 3, they were given 2 periods of lessons weekly. After that, the class is dropped. Now, this already clearly shows how ICT is being neglected. Okay so that may not be that all bad, right? At least we still learn something every week? However, as far as I remember, ICT lessons had always been a farce. I know there was capable teachers teaching before, but they no longer do. Now, we are left with teachers who knows less than most people here on the internet.
I asked juniors before what they learned during the lessons, and guess what? Half the time, they are imprisoned in the computer lab and are stripped away the rights to use the computers. Even if they do, they end up learning things from more than half a decade ago. Examples are Microsoft Office 2003. Why can’t they move on to 2007 which is now already 4 years behind? They’re learning programming languages as well? That’s neat. But- Which one? Turns out to be Microsoft Visual Basic which was mainly used in the year 1991. Exactly 2 decades old. What happened to modern languages with higher capabilities like Java? They are practically teaching students things that we will never be able to apply. So what is the point of even learning if they will never be of any use?
When it comes to terms of technology, I believe, we should always move on and adapt to changes. Programs nowadays are constantly updated, and hardware keeps getting better and better. Computers used to be such a breakthrough that it’s price goes very well higher than most people’s pay. Then comes the laptop, and computers became affordable. Then comes advancing technology which drastically reduced their prices. Thumb drives today with a size of 32GB may be the best and most expensive, but in a few years they will be nothing more than thrash which no one will ever get. I believe technology goes under the same concept. We human constantly advance. We go towards the future where infinite possibilities lies. So, why are we still a shadow of other nations?
That is a fact that I refuse to accept. I want to make a change. Adaption are a necessity to survival. That is true even to animals. We should no longer live in the past. We should live in the present and live for the future; not linger in shadow of the past.
That, is my mission as the president of the computer club.
Welcome, Silver! He is now the baby of the family. Just 3 months old, and is hyperactive, energetic and indefatigable! Well, maybe he does get fatigued after playing, but you get the point.
He looks big for his size, but don’t be alarmed. It’s not Silver that is big, it’s my sister that is small. :P As you can see, he is an American Short Hair. White-ish gray in colour, much resembling the colour of a white tiger with a slight tint of gray. Beautiful mixture, I would say. So you can guess, he got his name from his fur.
Now let’s look a little closer up…
Notice there are brownish spots around his nose. In fact, the region around the stomach is coloured in brown too! If i’m not wrong, this trait was carried down by his grandparents or further ancestors. I’ll get to this later on. One more thing to note is the M that forms on his forehead! A pretty M. :D
There. You can see the stomach. Notice also the paws. They are completely black. This trait is also passed down by his ancestors. However, there are similarity between his family. They have the habit of kneading his paws regularly. I mean, really regularly. He’ll do it just about anytime and anywhere. As i’m writing this now, I’m pretty sure he still is. Even as I took the above picture, notice one paw is open and the other is closed. Yes, he’s kneading!
Lastly, look at his long tail! Among two of my cat, Tiger and Leo, Silver has the most perfect tail of all. Cats having their tail bent during birth is quite common, which inevitably and drastically reduce their market price. Tiger has a bent tail, so does Leo. In fact, Leo’s tail is so bent, it forms a hook. Much like the shape of a question mark – ?. However, we don’t care about the market values. We love them as they are and only adopt them when they’re really in need. Same goes to Tiger and Leo. Tiger’s a stray and Leo lost his value with his tail. So we took them in! Silver too. He may be perfect, but so far no one wants him. Let’s get back to topic. If Silver straightens his tail, it’ll be longer than his own body! Another side note is that, Silver’s tail looks much like a raccoon’s with the colour and the stripes. :P
Now, I mentioned something about his ancestors and family, no? I have seen his siblings and parents before. His mother is a complete light gray breed whereas his father is striped but has dark gray. So, it seems that Silver has best of both world – Light-ish gray with stripes. His other siblings however, one of them is full brown with stripes! The second one is surprisingly fully black! There’s no other reason to this besides generations of traits. His brown sibling is a lucky kitty. Having that colour of fur as an American Short Hair breed fetches over RM1000!
Silver may not be such an exquisite kitten but we still love him. :3
According to several people, 16th of July is a very eventful day, full of events going on from dawn to dusk. It is true for me, too. Not only do I have a whole morning from one event, I had to rush straight to an afternoon appointment of a competition! And my day only settled down in the late evening.
First up, my day started as early as 5.30, yes, obviously in the morning. So not used to it, as I don’t even wake up as early for school. I had to start early and make preparation for my uniform body’s grand event – Shaolin Wushu 2nd Treasure Hunt organized by me, together with the committees of Shaolin Wushu. All credits to them! They made the whole event possible. I’m glad the whole event went well in the end.
I especially liked our committee’s nametag.
So that’s pretty much it. Not many special events to be noted.
Next up, I had to rush to my next event immediately after the Treasure Hunt ends. That is the KDU Games Design Challenge 2011. I was like, an hour or more late for that event. However, thanks to my partner Ray, he managed to cover everything up until I came to give a hand. We were only given about 2 hours to complete a game from scratch. With that limited time, it is impossible, let me repeat, IMPOSSIBLE, to complete a well designed game without major bugs.
Here’s our game. It was planned by my partner, Ray. Here’s how it goes. The game is called “Still Alive”, and it is basically starring our hero, Adam, who is suppose to be first man on earth, and ironically is now the last man on earth, due to pollution and illness which wiped out the entire population and created his evil doppelgänger, Mada. Made symbolizes illness, sickness, pollution and every negativity you can think of. He controls servants that is designed to kill you. Adam’s job is to collect back “humanity” scattered all around, and at the same time avoiding Mada and his servants.
The gameplay is simple. It is, of course, a 2D based game where you can move around in a direction of up, down, left and right much like the classic Pokémon game on Gameboy. “Humanity” will be scattered around the map and you have to collect all of them in order to move on to the next level. You have lives too, of course. It decreases gradually as you collide with Mada’s servants, and it’s game over when your life reaches 0. Adam would be able to shoot and gain other special abilities as the game progresses.
So that was all the plan. Let’s see what we achieved.
Our storyline was put into the game correctly and precisely. Gameplay and controls were done nicely. Servants was created and they move around the map. Here’s our special feature - We have plenty of animations moving and glowing around the map which other teams lack. Example, our servant, a Jack-O-Lantern, blinks, which totally spells ‘touch me and you’ll be pumpin-ized!” Then our hero, Adam, has well… some extraordinary legs; it moves when he’s stationary and stops when he’s moving. How do you like that? The judges seems to love it. Another thing to note is that, my partner chose extremely creepy songs to match with the theme. I think that gave us a boost too.
So what was it that we did not accomplish? The shooting! We tried hard to make Adam shoot, but we encountered a major problem which makes the whole game crash whenever we click to shoot. With limited time, it was a plan unaccomplished. With that, all the other abilities planned went to the junkyard together with the shooting ability. In the end, we only had 2 levels, and level 2 crashed immediately upon arrival. This happened during the presentation to the judge. Ouch.
The judge was a KDU student. Plus, he is my senior! A former frees who I did not know existed until that day. He is known to be a genius. People around KDU has a nickname for him – Kami. Which directly translate to God in japanese, and I can see why. His face totally spells G O D with his terrorizing yet, gentle expression and he seems to radiate and aura of godliness with his presence. When all the senior committees of that event was wearing uniform, he just came in with a casual white shirt and pants. I may only seen him once on that day, but I can see that what people say is true. He practically debugged our game by just glancing at the game. That, he earned my complete respect. Also, he is suppose to be best Computer Engineer in whole of KDU.
With our game full of bugs and complete nothingness, we thought we’ll definitely not get top 3, as there are over 44 teams from not only Penang, but other states. But somehow, we were pretty shocked to hear our team name announced as the 2nd runner up. Very shocked indeed. We won ourselves pretty classy, or should I say, glassy trophies, certificates and some prize money.
Awesome isn’t it? I’m being such a show off here, but whatever. I’ll do as I wish in my space, here in my blog.
Oh yeah, I got some awesome freebies too!
Firstly, a shirt! No event is complete without their special shirt!
Also, I got a pretty adorable multi-USB port. Cute huh?
Special thanks to my partner, Ray Tan for all his efforts in the competition! Also, to “Kami” for giving us awesome scores during judging.
The purpose of the Dream post was to actually express my dreams which I have been having this few days. Just so you know, I’m not that type of person who normally dreams. Like really. About the previous post, I pretty much got strayed from my main topic, so I shall continue here on a different post instead.
Okay let’s start.
I had a dream. Perhaps, more of a nightmare. It was easier to remember nightmares rather than a sweet dream, and even if I do happen to remember, chances are, I’m not writing that in public. Dreams of any sort, are easily forgotten. Perhaps even the most frightening nightmare could be clearly forgotten within half an hour. Though the idea still remains, the details are missed out. When I do happen to dream of something extraordinarily weird, I try my hardest to remember the details, be it a sweet dream, or even a nightmare. I always have the urge to express a weird dream to someone.
This dream, nightmare to be exact, was seemingly very familiar. The night was still, purple clouds swirling upon the sky, not in such a clichéd way that it was swirling in a circle in which you normally see in the movies. Rather, it was stochastic, in a sense that those thick dense cloud would displace to any direction without the aid of wind. That, I remember clearly.
Time setting, I couldn’t be too sure. Was it late evening? Or was it perhaps in pass midnight? When the sky was dyed an abnormal colour of eggplant purple, who could tell? The place was ironically the front parking lot of the MBF (Malaysia Business Forum) just located a few meters from my grandparent’s house. I could remember. This was not the first time I had this dream. However, it was not a repeat. Rather, it was more like a sequel to my older dream. Strange. That very dream made me recalled back the older nightmare which I had almost completely forgotten. As I said, details are usually left out.
However, these are what I remembered; I was walking back to my grandparent’s house through the back alley of the MBF tower. It was a shortcut that we always used. This time however, we were walking by foot, together with a few unknowns which I’m failing to remember. The exterior design of the place changed drastically. The settings was divergent, where it becomes more like the back alley you see in a movies. Dark, silent, with a gate with chains at the very end of the alley. To the right, there was yet another pathway, but again, there was an iron gate with chains all over it. Towards the left however, there was a door leading to the tower. I remember, that I was trying to break open the front gate but with no succession.
Have you ever had the feeling that when your mind is so focused into doing something, that something from behind might just be watching you? That was exactly the feeling. When you start to notice, things might already be too late. I turned back immediately, but in reality, there was always nothing except my imaginations playing tricks on me. Unfortunately, I’m away from reality at that moment. So as you might guess, there was something behind. It was a dark, black figure, much like a silhouette. A figure that closely resembles a hound, or more precisely, a rottweiler. The eyes were glowing a sinister red. That was as close as I can descriptively explain about the looks.
When one was bad enough, more and more started to appear. They have variation on their bodies. The size, shape and appearances looked more gruesome and strange. Running away was the only thing that would come to mind. We ran and ran, but at the very end, there was more of those waiting at the end. To all corners, there was more, until a place where the gates with chains appears to be the only hope of escaping. Then that’s where desperation of breaking the chains open even though you know it’s next to impossible comes in. There was in fact, noting else you could do, when you’re surrounded with hundreds of this dire, horrific hound-like creature, each with bloodthirsty red eyes craving for a bite each at you.
When all hope seems lost, to the extend where you’re just a split second away from mental death, you are rescued. Saved by the one who’s responsible for the horror experience – your brain. Shifting back to reality, everything will be at peace and serenity. Except that your heart still pounds with all its might from the devastation from its close family, the brain. Wonder what kind of relationship those organs have.
A few moment later, the brain compensates for its earlier game by making itself forget about it. It fades away, and leaves no trace. Until your playful brain decides to repeat its action, or better yet, make a sequel to it’s game.
Now, things may start different. For this, I remember starting inside a public bus. Time setting was late evening instead. The sky gave a purplish glow yet again, but with a highlight of orange this time. Things were pretty peaceful and calm. A bit too calm. The passengers were as if they had their souls vacuumed out. They looked pale, as if petrified to turn gray. That didn’t bother me for some reason. If it was reality, it sure would. My stop was ironically, the MBF tower. Why? I have not the slightest clue. I was with another 3 person whom I don’t remember. The funny thing is, I don’t remember being with anyone in the bus. Upon reaching, things started to look familiar. VERY familiar. Too familiar, in fact. The sky was the same, every setting was similar to the previous dream! Fear started to strike. It’s as if you’re getting trapped the second time.
A shadow slithers by from the alley, and what do you know? It’s the bloodthirsty hound again. This time, they weren’t in packs, it was alone. I remember wrestling with it this time. It was strong and full of stamina. One of the unknown person who was following me took over and tackled the beast head on to the point where it was unable to stood up. 2 other unknowns escaped to the side door of the tower. Then, I ran to the alley and things started looking more and more familiar. I literally remembered a dream inside my own dream! How often do you get that?
I remember deciding to make a turn to that unknown door which was left unexplored in my previous dream. About 50 meters ahead, there was a another door that seemingly spell freedom from the horror. I ran as fast and swiftly as I could. Motion became slower and slower, as if time was fooling with me. Then the ceiling collapse in an instant when I was just about to reach. Again, the brain just loves to play with you. You’re shifted back to reality and everything but your heart is fine.
Dreams. They are truly, truly strange. What you experience in a dream in just unexplainable. Why did I get those dream? Hounds? MBF Tower? How does those two even relate? No, I don’t hate dogs or ever tortured a dog to deserve them nightmarishly coming back at me.
Dreams are just weird. Period.
